The 765-acre Santa Elena Cloud Forest Reserve is located on the Caribbean side of the Continental Divide, 5 kilometers northeast of Santa Elena, in Monteverde. This community-managed and leased by the local high school, is a great cloud-forest reserve option, since it's less visited than its better know park neighbor, especially in high season.

It is also at a slightly higher elevation than the Monteverde reserve, so it tends to be cloudier and wetter, but it offers visitors very similar features in terms of both flora and fauna. There are over 10 kilometers of trails, with one leading to a lookout point from which you can see Volcán Arenal on a clear day.
On this walk you will be accompanied by one of the best bilingual naturalist guides in Costa Rica. The focus will be on natural history where you will learn of incredible diversity of flora and fauna and the many unique relationships cloud forest species share.

A special feature of this reserve is that it is run by the Santa Elena High School and entrance fees go toward educational programs in the area. The trails are not as well-groomed and maintained as the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve, but it is often much less-crowded in the high season.

If you are an avid birdwatcher or really wanting to see as much wildlife as possible (keeping in mind it's very unpredictable what will show themself) choose the early morning walking tour for the greatest chances.
